Updated project list.
I spent the majority of a day revamping the project list. The changes are pretty major. For a basic idea, click here for a screencap of the list on
chomalfoyfics in light form before its change, and here for a cap of the new list on DW in light form.
To go into a little more depth, I've been contemplating a change of this nature for some time. I didn't like a lot of things about the old layout: the bullets weren't working for me, I didn't like the way the
dogdaysofsummer stories were listed, placing the fandoms in alphabetical order put SPN near the bottom, the fandoms I'd only written one story for got lost in the mix, some of the fandom subheadings made little sense to me, and so on. I could list more reasons.
I came up with this version based on several factors:
Checking the layouts of others. Very few people used a layout similar to mine, and the few that did felt too cramped. Of course, I was less concerned with following the crowd and more concerned with something functional, but the other layouts gave me a springboard for ideas.
More site choices for the reader. There was really no reason for me to only list LJ fic on LJ and only DW fic on DW when I've been archiving my stories on AO3 as well. Plus, if a person stumbles on the list on one site and prefers another, it lets them jump to the story they want immediately.
Clearer fandom listings. I follow authors I like, and all too frequently, it's hard to find the fandoms I know on their lists if they aren't as prominent in their affections as others. My list had a similar problem until now. Between giving every fandom its own section, listing all the fandoms on the top of the entry, and using HTML links to jump around the page, all the fandoms get more equal time.
More complete listings. While I'm a little afraid I may have included too much information, I'm still pleased all the items I like when I consider fic are now on the list: title, rating, word count, spoilers, pairings/groupings or characters, time posted, and the summary. Most importantly, I don't group by gen/slash/femmeslash/het on this page at all.
dogdaysofsummer. Finally, my
dogdaysofsummer 2009 stories get the same treatment as the other stories in the community. It took me nearly a year to get around to listing them properly, but better late than never!
Minor fixes. The previous list had some minor errors, such as wrong ordering and incorrect links. Those should be fixed. It's not unlikely I've created some new errors along the way, since it's the middle of the night and I'm overtired, but they'll get corrected at some point as well.
Easier to update. It's not like the old system was complex, but for the most part, the new system will make updating fic much easier, particularly in fandoms I've already posted in. New fandoms will take me more time, but as I stated above, it's worth it.
More accurate depiction of my personal investment. At this point, all my posted fic totals a word count of around 125,000 words, give or take a couple hundred. And that's not counting the over 30,000 words of fic I'll be posting in the next week, between
lgbtfest and
spn_j2_bigbang. Or the 25,000+ words of fic I'll be posting by the end of the year, based solely on three commitments I've made at the moment. Quantity doesn't equal quality, of course, but that's a lot of time spent, and I get a better sense of that when I look at this page.
I hope the changes I've made are more useful for readers who might peruse the community. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to make it even more useful.
Edit: I also made the project list sticky, so it's the first visible post on the community. This is another personal taste item, both in terms of what I like when I see other fic journals and in terms of finding the post to edit.
